BMAA and Spirulina Issue

We have been flagging concerns all week on the issue of Spirulina and BMAA. We went to the source which we have trusted for some time now. We have used spirulina for many years off and on now. Spirulina  offers many tremendous health benefits in terms of being anti-carcinogenic, a great natural source of B12 and numerous other important vitamins and minerals. Veing a green, it has the unique ability to offer these nutrients, while cleaning the body, and when used carefully, will not increase inflammation like amny other supplements meant to offer these same nutrients. Here are the two email exchanges from the NOW company:

Hi Dr. Brizman,

The environmental toxin beta-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is produced by cyanobacteria, the blue-green algae that live in soil, lakes, and oceans. This  is a possible issue in Klamath Blue Green algae due to its wild status. We do not carry this type of algae.

BMAA is not an issue for cultivated algae such as chlorella, astaxanthin, nor for spirulina which are all grown in fresh water.  However, we do test for the presence and it is absent.

Thank you,

We obtain our spirulina from several high quality suppliers in Southern India and Northern China (Inner Mongolia). The spirulina is organically grown in  remote, arid regions, far removed from pollution, by  experienced companies using man made fresh water ponds and tested to be free of impurities, microcystins, radioactivity etc.

We test each new batch of spirulina for heavy metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic and lead), microbes, radiation and other contaminants in our USA facility:https://www.nowfoods.com/supplements/quality-safety
