Anyone gone to Mexico while in treatment and lived to tell about it?
Of course I'd drink bottled water and not brush w/ tap or anything, but I'm still nervous about going to that country, esp the food or picking up some bacteria somehow. I've gotten sick several times in Mexico when I was well! (although maybe I was unknowingly very unbalanced then and that made me more susceptible?)
I went a couple of years ago
I went a couple of years ago and did farily well. ( I have had IC for 10 years) I just stuck to bottled water and ate at the hotel restaurant. I did well on the cheeseburger and eggs for breakfast and just basically had that everyday because I was too scared to venture out and didnt want my vacation to be ruined by flares. (I wasnt with Matia at the time)Hopefully you will get some more responses! Ask Matia and pick her brain.Becky
Mexico
I went to Mexico before treatment and felt great. We stayed at nice hotels and the food was amazing. Avoid chlorinated pools and hot tubs. I got a terrible infection after sitting in a hot tub. The ocean is a healthier place to swim.
meat vs. other things
Thanks for the replies so far... at the mention of burgers it brought up another food question: Is it best to stick to meat rather than fish? And how do you get the daily veggies in if all is cooked in/washed in water?
(We would be staying at a nice hotel w/ its own filtration system.)
i also went to mexico twice
i also went to mexico twice and i was ok...sry to say it was way way way b4 treatment..and i drank the tap beer...soo thats pretty bad...haha...and i never got sick...i also had no problems in the pool...and i did have IC at the time...but i was young and on spring break so it was party time...not an option now...LOL... If ur stayin at a nice hotel i would think u would b ok....maybe stick to a small portion of veggies per dinner...it might just b a chance u have to take....and i would prob stay away from fish cause of the water and how they prepare it..is there any food can bring??...what list are u on?good luck!!
while in treatment
I'm really asking about going to Mexico while in treatment b/c now is when we're so imbalanced & reacting the strongest plus needing specific water, diet rules, etc.
I am past List 4 but still can't have any sauces/condiments/dressings/sugars. It's not a case of them not having enough I can eat, it's more what to eat that's safe.
I'll have to check on what foods I can take with me though we won't have kitchen/fridge. Years ago I made food ahead and once in Mexico the authorities wouldn't let me take it in, had to throw it out! I was so pissed.
you have to wonder though
you have to wonder though when they prepair things they aren't using bottled water I would talk to Matia about it. Maybe she has some advise for you. How long are you going for?

Yes, I do wonder about that too!, the preparing food in water. Nice hotels claim their whole system is filtrated but I know I've gotten sick before at nice hotels. I feel like when we're in treatment we're more vulnerable to all this stuff. Which is interesting b/c you'd think we'd have the hardest time hanlding things at our sickest point, like before treatment when everything was going to s(%*. But once in treatment my body became so sensitive to many things... tho not nearly as bad as some others on here.
I'm still going to ask Matia but I did want to hear others' experiences.
If I go it'd be in Feb. I'm scared to but it's important for my husband's work that I be there.
