i am fighting either an ic flair or a UTI, i am working with Matia by email to fiqure it out. SO frustrating!!! I have been virtually pain free for over a year!  Now i have been camped out in the bathroom for 3 days.  Think i just need to vent a bit!!!

i am using ice packs for the pain...not helping much.  Do any of you have ideas of what to do for the constant pain? I have not asked her about it. i am so tempted to take something!

thanks

Have you ever tried Elavil?  I have used it over the years and it has helped me along with baking soda. I by no means take it every day, only when I had a flare. (once or twice a year at most)
Whatever is going on Matia will get to the bottom of it.
Feel better!

yowza.  i would not take this.  FYI matia recommends heat not cold for some reason.  my mom taught me a trick with propping your legs up with 2 pillows (put them under your thighs).  This is oddly really helpful (it has to do with taking the pressure off your lower back).  Also, drinking a ton of water to dilute the nasties is super helpful for me.  hope you feel better!!!

Yowza? Okay, so you would not take it.  Some of us over the years have taken it and it helps us. ONCE OR TWICE a year at the most.

Hey there Nancy-
Sorry to offend you, but I have to say that "taking elavil once or twice a year" just sounds strange considering that its not meant to be taken as a one off, but rather over time.  Considering what I've read from the IC clinical trials (I'm an epidemiology student), the effects of Elavil on IC are not well understood.  Lastly, there were NO differences in symptoms between patients taking a placebo and taking elavil.  Therefore, taking it during a bad flare makes no sense. See the study below.

I personally, think "yowza" at the thought of taking any IC drugs given the fact that a) the results from them are not different from taking NOTHING and b) the drug in question is meant to be taken over time.   If you want more information, I keep up with the epidemiology of IC and the various clinical trials going on.

Below please find the guidelines on Elavil.

"Take this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day. Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.
It is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when this drug is suddenly stopped. Also, you may experience symptoms such as mood swings, headache, tiredness, and sleep change. To prevent these symptoms while you are stopping treatment with this drug, your doctor may reduce your dose gradually. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Report any new or worsening symptoms immediately.
This medication may not work right away. You may see some benefit within a week. However, it may take up to 4 weeks before you feel the full effect."

WOW.... That is a lot of information!
My Elavil was prescribed by a doctor who knows exactly how I take it and has no problem with it. In 2010 I took it a total of 4 days.
It works great for me, helps calm the burn and lets me get a well needed night of sleep. It is not for everyone, clearly not you!
PS. Not offended :)
