knee surgery...

Hey all,

so i tore my meniscus and have been to an orthopedic surgeon who strongly recommends arthroscopic surgery. this surgery isn't super invasive and would repair the tear, but it requires being put under and such. i've done research and also believe it's the best option. I just wanted to know if anyone has had experience with necessary surgery during treatment and what, if any, kind of setbacks they experienced. I am pretty much broke and can't even afford my appointment with matia this month and the procedure is $5000, so all this is very intense. The last thing I want is to set myself back considerably, but I don't really have another option at this point. all-around advice definitely needed!!! thanks

Hi Whitney:

I just had my uterus removed 4 months ago.  Matia agrees that this was the right decision for me and I knew that I would have a setback.  I sure did but it was necessary.  There were a lot of meds involved including antibiotics, painkillers etc...  I do now finally feel that I am bouncing back and do not regret my surgery as my situation was worsening and my progress with treatment was being delayed.  If your surgery is necessary I would go for it but know that there may or may not be a bit of a setback.  Earlier last year I had also a minor surgery on my ear and had local freeezing.  I did not have any problems with that surgery.

I really appreciate the support, just knowing you all are out there and care makes a world of difference. I live in Wyoming away from all my good friends and family, so i'm scared to do all this alone. and getting all that stuff pumped into my body.... ugh. Kristen, would love to hear about your experience with knee surgery. I hear that this type isn't too bad in comparison to others, but currently without any pain meds I am seriously hurting and I can't imagine how i'll feel after surgery! trying to stay calm... thanks again :)

Hey Whitney~I am sooo sorry that you are going through this.  I'm sure you already know all your options regarding knee surgery but I was just remembering someone I know did the same thing. He decided not to have it and do physical therapy and keep the surrounding muscles strong instead.  I don't know if he is in really bad pain but he got a few opinions and decided to wait until it got really bad.  This is just a thought as something else to consider.....I hope you feel better soon and have a fast recovery.  hugs, shar

Hi Whitney,
Ugh, sorry you must go through this, but you can do this.  I've had setbacks in treatment from other causes but each time eventually I plod along and get further.  And for what it's worth my skin surgeries w/ local anesthetic a few times caused no issues.
You might check w/ Nicole? or the post she did recently re: dental surgery, she seemed to know a lot of good questions to ask and things I'd never think of, like a drug they plan to give you could be ok but suspended in a certain solution that is problematic. The more you know ahead, the more prepared, plus you could run by Matia.  Even if it will set you back, getting a handle on what to expect ahead of time can help you bear it.  Maybe you can also ask the dr's if there are other options that exist but most ppl don't use?  Never hurts to ask.
Healing prayers your way...

Thanks lisa, i looked over all the dental work posts and it actually was very helpful. Luckily Matia had an opening tomorrow morning for an "emergency" appointment because I just found out i'm getting surgery friday (otherwise would have to wait 3 weeks!) and I will go over everything with her. I will ask her what I can do to be prepared, what to expect bladder-wise... that will all help me deal and get well again. I really appreciate all the suggestions/input, it's helped get my mind in the right place. thanks!
