craving vs preference

I asked this in another thread but it got lost in there I think. Many people talk about cravings and in a negative way. How do you define a cravng vs just liking something a lot? Craving seems to come from imbalance vs just "I like potatoes with rosemary- yum." If you wouldn't mind describing how you see a craving- thanks

OMG this is a GREAT QUESTION. My first thought is that Dr. B tried to assure me that as I become more balanced I would be able to walk away from ANY food. At this point I find that hard to believe LOL. And she is not sayting that I wont enjoy some potatoes with rosemarry (YUM). I do think that the more carbs one eats, the more a craving cycle is set up. It must be physiological, having to do with how carbs boost mood and provide a certain kind of energy in the body.

ALso we know for sure that yeast and other imbalances set up cravings in the body and If I am craving a food it might mean it is feeding the imbalance. But when Dr. B and I talked about this she seemed to feel only certain foods did this (fungal, aged, sugar). I think blood sugar imbalances do this but most of us on this diet have that well under control.

On the Perfect Health Diet web page they have a nice food model (in opposition to the US Food Pyramid) which is an apple. In the apple are the bulk of the foods they recommend. In the shadow of the apple are the foods they suggest avoiding. On the leaf of the apple are what they call "pleasure foods" which include nuts, cheese, chocolate. I think that is a nice way to look at it. Let's face it, fats are satisfying and to some extent, so are carbs. Fats and carbs do provide pleasure and I think a little of that is ok!! Since I don't eat sugar, Kerrygold butter, our beloved Fage, and cashews look pretty good to me. Maybe some day I won't care about those foods. Hmmm hard to imagine!

When I am planning to have yogurt or cashews, I do think "Yum" but this is different than finishing a carb-laden meal like my mom and father in law do, and than immediately foraging around for some chocolate or a cookie. THAT is a craving with out a doubt, and THAT for me is gone. Thank god. This is what I used to do every day at 4pm. Sigh. Kind of a rambling perspective. Sorry for that! LOL

thanks Mimi. I honestly do not think I truly "crave" anything. But I do think I associate things with pleasure. So, it is hard for me to have a cup of coffee without a carbish thing. Although I do like almonds with coffee too. I guess the only food at this point that makes me want to eat it is pizza- if my family gets it. And then only if I am hungry -then I am struggling to fight the pull of it. I know my husband used to crave sugar and since his diet has improved more and more over the past 10 years, he rarely does. Not that he doesn't enjoy the occasional ice cream but he doesn't crave a pack of sweet-tarts. Eww. Seriously, the thought of them just made me grimace.

Is it a craving if you want a certain texture?   I find myself craving crunchy things because I feel like I eat soft and mushy things right now.

I htink that is just normal! Variety is the spice of life!

For me during the first 4 months on the diet I literally CRAVED certain foods without even seeing them. For a while it was oranges, then bananas, then blueberries. I only wanted cookies when they were right in front of me and once they were out of sight I was fine.  Right now I'm not really craving it but would love something made with pumpkin because I associate seasons with certain foods. The cravings have very much subsided now thankfully.

For me, my cravings are usually for unhealthy or unusual things like chocolate cake, dill pickle chips, sour cherry candies ... mcdonalds (gasp)! Haha. A craving is like a sudden strong urge to eat a specific food and usually passes. Whereas I think a food you 'like' is just a food you enjoy but you aren't sitting around thinking about it all day. I feel that way about potatoes, roast chicken, blueberries, chocolate etc.

The pizza thing is very funny because I react to that too! I think part of it is that it is so aromatic and is wafting in your face!  Smells must hit on a deep level. I make sourdough toast for my daughter sometimes and the smell is very compelling!!!! Or canyon bakehouse agave-sweetened cinnamon bread. JUST the smell is enough to get my cravings up!

Mimi, My grocery store just started carrying Canyon Bakehouse bread, but I wasn't sure if it was something we could have. Can we or do you make it for your girls?

Katie, I make it for my girls, but I imagine list 5 you could have it once or twice a week, like an "agave sweetened treat" mentioned on her lists? That cinammon bread smells amazing! Also, adding cinnamon- apple butter spread to a slice of plain list 4 toast would have a similar effect!
