Did You Catch This?

I posted this on Bomamed, but in case anyone missed it, it is really important!

US House and Senate are about (in a week and a half) to vote on bill that will OUTLAW ORGANIC FARMING (bill HR 875) http://www.govtrack .us/congress/ billtext. xpd?bill= h111-875. There is an enormous rush to get this into law within the next 2 weeks before people realize what is happening.

Main backer and lobbyist is (guess who) Monsanto – chemical and genetic engineering giant corporation. This bill will require all farms, including organic, to use specific fertilizers and poisonous insect sprays dictated by the newly formed agency to "make sure there is no danger to the public food supply". This will include backyard gardens that grow food only for a family and not for sales.

If this passes then NO more heirloom clean seeds but only Monsanto genetically altered seeds that are now showing up with unexpected diseases in humans.

There is a video on the subject.

And another one:

The name on this outrageous food plan is Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 (bill HR 875).

THIS IS REAL, FOLKS! PASS THIS ALONG TO ALL CONCERNED ON YOUR MAILING LISTS & CALL YOUR SENATE REPRESENTATIVES TODAY!

The best thing to do is go to www.house.gov/ writerep all you have to do is put in your zip and it will give you your congressperson and how to get in touch with them. When you call their office someone will answer the phone, just tell them (politely) that you are calling to express your views on HR 875. Tell them your views, they'll take your name and address and pass your comments along to the congressperson. The following linkhttp://www.senate. gov/general/ contact_informat ion/senators_ cfm.cfm is a list of the U.S. senators and their contact info.

I am looking through this new act and cannot find where it states specific rulings for produce/seeds/pesticides, and outlaws organic farming.  Where is that?  I want to find it before I call my senatorthanks!icnot4me

It never says it directly, as no bill truly seems to get to the point, but finds some roundabout what to make it sound beneficial and protective when it's really just taking away basic human rights (like the ability to grow your own food!). I think section 401 is maybe a little more direct in demonstrating how it will hinder organic and personal food production directly. For example:It is prohibited...(9) to slaughter an animal that is capable for use in whole or in part as human food at a food establishment processing any food for commerce, except in compliance with the food safety lawI think that statement essentially says you can't raise and kill your own meat for your own use and I'm assuming this also applies to small organic farms that raise meat for local farmer's markets- a lot of them are organic but don't pay for someone to come out and tell them they can use that silly label that doesn't mean much of anything these days! Anyways, I can't stand the language of these things, they mislead the public and this bill passed spells disaster. Big corps like Monsanto already have WAY too much power and I hope we can get it back! We know better than anyone just how many chemicals and such are in our environment/food!Also, for anyone looking to read a good book on this sort of topic, I recommend Stolen Harvest by Vandana Shiva. It's amazing and upsetting. One of my favorites.

Ok, I have the contact info for my state rep and two senators.  What is the best way to contact them?  Via email or phone?  Do you think they really get to the emails?

How in the World are they planning to police this?  Especially for home gardeners?

Hi Everyone-This bill is still in committee--it hasn't gone to the house floor yet.  If you've already called--call again IF the bill goes to the floor for a vote.  This is a good website to track the bill http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-875.  Also--do not email, emails are not counted, whereas calls are tallied.Peace,Xandra

If you want more info on this, Dr. Mercola has a page on it:  http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/04/02/Monsantos-...
Toward the bottom, under "What Can You Do?" he lists several other steps we can take to fight this.

A friend has since told me that snopes.com's investigation of these claims determined they're "mostly false."
