Safer Fish

I get a lot of requests for information on the fish that have been found to have the lowest mercury contents and the following list comes from the compnay Nordic Naturals:

I will skip on the ones that are highest or medium, presuming that one would not want to eat those!

Anchovies, Calamari, Catfish, Clam, Cod, Crawfish, Flounder*, Haddock, (atlantic*), Hake, Herring, Mackarel, Mullet, Oyster, Perch (ocean), Plaice/Pollack, Salmon**, Sardine

Scallop*, Sole (pacific), Tilapia (Matia does not recommend this for those with IC), Trout (fresh water), Whitefish, Whiting.

*overfished, ** May contain PPCBs

I didn't realize that Tilapia was not recommended. Does it promote pain?

I have just noticed that it seems to flare people and I don't quite know why! But, if you are OK with it, then it is fine.

Mahi Mahi is high in uric acid just an FYI they say to soak it in a fat before cooking it.

Oh my!  I have been eating tilapia every week for about a year!  I will watch and see if it is affecting me.  what about chunk light canned tuna in water and perch?  I eat those a lot as well, expecially the tuna.  What in the world does overfished mean?  Sorry for all these questions, I am confused by this list as to which are the worst to eat.

When I go back to my regular office on Tuesday I will recheck the sheet I have to answer all of these. I am not sure about the Mahi mahi, and tuna i think is recommended in only smaller amounts because of the mercury, but it has nothing to do with pain. Tilapia, I have only noticed SEEMS to correlates with some patients flares, but unless you are seeing that affect, then for you perhaps it is not the case.

Yikes!  I eat tuna at least 3-4 times a week.  I had read that chunk light canned tuna was not as high in mercury as other fish, so I thought it was ok.  should I stop eating it so much?  is it keeping me 'sick'?

From what I have read in recent years there doesn't seem to be such a thing as "safe fish" anymore.  The pollutants are higher in some fish than others but even the safer ones still contain pollution.  I wasn't aware of the Tilapia causing worse pain in people with IC.  I eat it often.  My symptoms are never very stable, so sometimes it is hard to tell what I am reacting to.  I will try to be more aware and watch for a reaction now that I know.  I think that chicken bothers me at times too.  Has anyone else noticed that chicken bothers them?  I can't eat turkey at all without getting a flare.
