Treating colds with herbs

I recently read Matia's blog about herbs to have in your medicine cabinet.  I have many of the herbs on hand.  Have any of you treated yourself or a family member for a cold using Gung Mio Ling, Ear Formula, Goldenseal Root, or Siberian Eluthero?  My husband has a cold with his main symptoms being a runny nose and chest congestion. I really don't want him to take antibiotics since he may play a part in my imbalance.  Would you mind sharing what you took for a cold?

I ended up emailing Matia since I also have a cold today.

I have had many colds, flus, strep throats, and even bronchitis a couple times and nothing I have tried has worked better.  It is too bad the NIH or other respected institutions haven't done any controlled studies using chinese herbs to treat respiratory infections.  Interesting though that oscillonicocum homeopathic remedy can claim that in controlled studies that it shortened the duration of cold/flu. Could it be that Boiron is now owned by one of the largest pharmaceutical companies? Even the probiotic studies are only done with probiotics produced by Big Pharma. Why is that?

I can't find the blog that tells the herbs to have in your medicine cabinet. I'm very interested so can you please tell me how to find it? Was it on this site or Bomamed? What month? Thanks

I just did a search and it was on Matia's Blog 11/25/2008.

Would you just take these when a cold comes on, or check w/ Matia first?
Even if they would help treat the cold, couldn't they worsen bladder symptoms and mess with the delicate protocol that Matia's got going for us?

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS check with Matia. She has recommeded things to me that would help my acute illness but not impact too severely or at all my proticol. I noticed it was always for a short time (this cold/flu herb) as to just kind of kick my immune system up a notch and it helped my body kick the cold/flu out.  I think the post on  chinese first aid medicine cabinet post was more of a guide for families and for folks that have gotten back into balence with IC.  She had said something about holding workshops on this stuff at Bomamed - kind of Wholistic Family health idea. I agree.  Herbs must be taken under the guidance of a professional.
