Cravings

While some cravings are good ones because your body is telling you what it needs--such as protein, green veggies, etc..

If you find your body keeps sending you to that frozen yoghurt shop or the chocloate section of the grocery store, or you can't resist the impulse the have some pankcakes and syrup before bed....hmmmm, that might make you pause to wonder why.

I was just having a conversation this am about the very subject in the following article as I have had countless times. It seems like science is substantiating this theory that the microbes are creating those cravings that make you eat in a way that is not best for you.

Why is this? Becuase these are living organisms that want to stay alive. In order to do so, they require food to proliferate. That food that they require is largely sweets--so when you are winning the battle and reducing that overgrowth, those cravings often will become more fierce.

It is then one must use every ounce of intellect and willpower to fight off that seductive craving that "makes" you eat the choclate cake or have that glass of wine. Later, when your gut is in better balance, it is not difficult at all. You can walk away without a second blink of an eye.

This is just what I needed! I just posted in my '4 months after birth' post about the difficulty I have with avoiding sweet things. Btw, the Cork university mentioned in the guardian article about the gut is the uni I went to! Half hr away from where I am! Will find out if they do analysis as a service that anyone can use. Would be interesting!

I was just trying to explain this to someone tonight, and got a lot of blank stares and badgering thinking that I could have an influence on reducing inflammation and getting well! I finally gave up trying as felt like I was on trial, but this is a good article explaining it. Thanks for sharing!

I stopped having sugar cravings long ago, but I still get a lot of carb cravings. I wonder what that means in terms of candida overgrowth. If the overgrowth was still very bad, wouldn't I be getting both sugar and carb cravings?

CArb cravings is just another version of sugar cravings-excess carbs turn into sugar and end up creating overgwoth. One needs to eat just enough carbs to fuel energy from meal to meal, no more than that. So bec careful!

Thanks for clarifying. I probably sometimes overdo it with the carbs, so I'll try to be more careful about this.

Claire, I'm the same way with waffles, but hard to make waffles when grain and egg free. I usually make a huge mess and just scrape the make shift waffles from the waffle iron because they don't hold together well, all just to satisfy my cravings! Oh goodness! Crazy!!!

My vices are rice cakes and rice crackers. Can't control myself. And for large periods of treatment, I haven't allowed myself to buy them even though I tolerate them.

Thank you for sharing this, I really needed to hear it. I'm a month in with List one and my cravings AND aversions are intense, but I'm fighting them tooth and nail. My body wants sweet and I'm having to gag down my vegetables and proteins.  Which is weird because I have always loved vegetables. So could it go the same way for aversions? The living organisms don't want them thus making me dry heave while eating them?!

I have to share that my cravings now are pretty readable..ie Nuts and meat occur when body needs protein and fresh veggies craving, an indication when out of balance for those and so on...Regarding chocolate and sweets, I can now make  decadent cakes and such for the family without even consider a piece..Aha! obviously those little criiters( that is unfriendly bacteria) are not as hungry.I do crave coffee when very tired and looking for stimulation  but that's pretty obvous..all of this after experiencing many many varied strong cravings during earlier treatment..."proof is in the pudding"  (so to speak..)
This posting reminded me and wanted to share..Thanks Dr M

So glad Lolo. Being driven by your cravings can be so life disruptive and all consuming ( no pun intended). It is such a good feeling to start feeling more free from that.

Are vegetables like beetroot/sweet potato/butternut squash considered carbs? When these are in a meal, is there no need for rice/potato?

Yes, I consider these carbs because they are so starchy-any veggies that are heavy I count that way. I find it is a much better way to look at the plate and more realistic in terms of what it is providing the body.

Dr M,

With cravings, is it always a sign that we shouldn't eat it? I have read we usually crave things that we are intolerant too because our brain is addicted to the reaction leading to the vicious cycle of inflammation and once we cut it then we crave it because of the withdrawal symptoms.  When can we  listen to our "gut" and eat because it is truly what our bodies need? This has been the hardest for me. I seem to tolerate what I crave for a while then pain and inflamed feeling gets worse and never know if truly coming from the food or something else and continue to cut food until there is really nothing left.

Well, this is a great question--I think like everything in life, we need to take it in the context it is coming in. So, if you are craving cigarrettes and beer and then a little choclate cake, nope, dont listen. But, if youa re craving red meat and brocolli, it's a big yes!
Back in the day I used to be addicted to frozen yoghurt. I literally would make Boaz drive me after late nights in school to a local frozen yoghurt place to satisfy my addiction. I thought it was normal-hmmmm. No. It was not normal at all.
Now, I listen to my body-d I feel like chicken or red meat, or do I want kale or romaine-and I go by those feelings. But, as you get healthier your body's signals will be much more reliable!

I am not one to really crave sweets always cold, sour, and salty. Has been this way since I was very little. I couldn't live without my dill pickles and lemons! For Christmas my grandparents would always be sure to buy me jars of pickels for my stocking! :) But, I will say frozen yogurt and ice cream are by the hardest things for me to walk away from when it comes to sweet things. I bought an ice cream maker and just put in my plain goat yogurt and sometimes almond butter to satisfy my cravings. Thanks, as always for all the helpful info, Dr. M!

Craving temperatures of things and other flavors are all representative of different organ imbalances. Typically those cravings are pretty straight forward. Boaz and I put up a site when we graduated school. We never did anything with it really-it was basic, basic Chinese medicine and talks about things of this sort. You can look it up, it is orientalmedicine.com.
