Halloween

My mother was a Halloween fantatic. She planned months in advance and hand made each of our costumes. She would lie to us and tell us we were going to be something we were not and surprise us with a completely different and elaborate costume in the 11th hour and everyone would be in awe of her amazing talent.

She was a chocoholic and in many ways, a really funny and great mother. She was the kind of mother that would probably be dipping into my halloween loot while I was sleeping and eat it for her self! One Easter, no kidding, the bottom of my easter bunny was eaten and re-placed in the grass as if nothing had attacked it the night before! She was always the mom who was "in" on all of the festivities of every holiday.

OK, now I have to be really honest. If I could run and hide with my kids on Halloween, I would. I was secretly happy when my little daughter was sick with the flu and I got to stay home with her a couple Halloweens ago. I dread it. And, I of course, abhor the candy.

These ideas were just sent to me ( I will never meantions names on my blog ) by one of you, and they are super cool! I will definitely try many of these and share with my daughter's school in hopes they also think it is cool on D day:)

We will be trying some of these for sure.  i allow my girls to trick or treat and have fun then we take the candy and exchange it for a toy or something they want from target.  The candy goes in the trash and the girls are always perfectly okay with this.

I let them have about 4-5 pieces on the night of Halloween and then I put it on top of the fridge where it is out of sight, remind them how toxic it is the next day when they ask and after it has gone in the trash too:) It's the getting the love for sure!

Halloween is so much fun for me because I love doing the creative costumes...and then the dread fills me as they come home with HUGE bags of candy. We live in a very old school small house neighborhood and my kids get PoUNDS of it. I have convinced them to give up most in exchange for another gift but it is getting tougher.  it is so tough not to create rebellion and secrecy!

Someone recommended the "Switch Witch" and it works nicely for the younger kids (even my 9 year old is going along). The switch witch comes while they are sleeping and takes the candy and replaces it with a small toy. They LOVE this! Also, we have been having a discussion about things to leave for trick or treaters at our door while we are out. We came up with colorful pencils for school, maybe some erasers or stickers of different kinds, and we are still brainstorming other ideas.

If we don't excel at health, the only other option is disease.
