Healthy Home

Last week I was speaking with a few people about renovation in their homes. I have posted a few times over the years regarding this subject. It is REALLY important, when painting, carpeting, putting down hardwood floors, etc... to be sure that the materials you are using are "clean" and "Green"!

Your renovation can emake you sick. There is so much off gassing from materials it does make a huge difference to those having health challenges and even to those who do not. Those who do not will be unaware of the ill effects whereas those having health challenges will feel it. However, the effect is there regardless. So, in some ways, it is a good thing to be able to feel it as it is a built in safe guard against all of the toxic effects that occur.

I have listed websites and references in the past and here are a few to just look at quickly now. There are so many great alternatives these days to the traditional products out there that can cause huge problems for yoiu and your family. -- http://www.afmsafecoat.com and http://www.ecospaints.net/ecos-polyurethane-varnish-stain.html?gclid=CKq... and http://www.naturescarpet.com.

Last year I had three people have horrible horrible flares for extended periods due to rennovations in their homes with traditional materials. It's something you don't always think about. But, please keep this in mind if you are getting close to a project. It does make a big difference.

We are thinking that we may need to tent our house for termites.  I'm worried about the effects of the poisions they use.  Is there a safer alternative?

There are alternatives with extermination such as orange oil bases. But, I am unsure if that applies to termites. I just looked on line and found this-- http://www.ablackflag.com/?gclid=CJSb78bS2sUCFQioaQodcCYAeA

I have had both a new carpet and tenting for termites since having IC. Of the two the carpet was the worse causing a horrible flare. I left for several weeks to visit my sister and it cleared up as I was free of the gases. The day I returned the flare returned and I just had to live with it till the gases finally settled down. It wasn't a choice since I rent so I couldn't get green. The termite tenting was a lot of work but I pretty well cleaned out all cupboards, the fridge, the closets and left just basic furniture covered with sheets. I stayed away for several days coming in to wash all linens, get the carpet cleaned, wash down the cupboards and fridge and pretty well never suffered a flare. It dissapates kind of fast. You think sometimes you are doing really well. Yes I had the frequent urination but no burning pain that left me disabled. Until the carpet, and I realized how susceptible I was to chemicals. It was quite frightening really. But you weather it and the body gets rid of it and you can continue on.
