Hormone Problems

Often in treatment, especially with newcomers, there is worry that their condition is a hormone problem.

There is no doubt that the pain is in synch with hormonal fluctuations. But, this is not due to a hormone problem, but rather, the condition of the IC responding to those hormonal ebbs and flows.

Ovulation and menstruation are very difficult to get through during treatment, while between those times, things may be quiet. This is very common, and more uncommon to not experience. These reactions will lessen during treatment, as will all of the "drama" that surrounds the whole cycle. The PMS phase will lessen to the point that the period should come on as mostly a surprise. And, the period cramps should be minimized to barely a tiny dull sensation of something. The flow should be regulated and the blood should become much fresher and cleaner looking as opposed to the often previously dull brown, purplish or clotted looking blood.

I hear the dismissal in patient's voices when I say this. But, over and over again, those who think it, slowly see these cyclical reactions changing. Even women who have had to take very high doses of advil or tylenol are able to stop the cycle of pain killers and are amazed at the differences in their menses. This is especially important, because often these pain killers are a part of the contributing causes of IC.

Also, don't forget-use unbleached cotton tampons or pads. The bleach is very toxic to your vaginal chemistry and can cause much more pain.!
