Nuclear Situation In Japan

I am definitely not an expert on nuclear radiation poisoning, but, have been scrambling to try and understand what is going on and what to do about it so that I could offer my patients any important information I can.

It is so frightening to face a situation like this all the way over here in the states, I cannot fathom being a parent over in Japan right now.

The potassium iodide that is being recommended will be a very big problem for sensitive people like those of you with IC. There are a couple other supplements that may be better choices for you, such as nascent iodine. Another recommendation may be Thyroid support by natra bio-a homeopathic that I have been directed to by Santa Monica homeopathic pharmacy here in LA.

Many of you already have diets rich in iodine btw, if you are drinking raw milk and eating yoghurt or eating seaweed. The idea is that if your iodine is plentiful that there will not be a deficiency for the radioactive iodine to try to absorb into your body and the radiation will pass through you.

After several days of worry, especially today, my husband (and partner) insisted I was making too much of this and that my fears were not warranted, and as I am reading a post tonight from the office of Jay Gordon, MD, a well respected pediatrician in Los Angles, he too feels the same way. He strongly feels there is no danger and that no potassium iodide should be taken. He feels there is no immediate danger and that the long term dangers relating to food will have insignificant effects.

I will follow this subject and impart any bit of information I can share. I am inclined to think that my husband and Jay are correct-we will be ok here. I hope so.

Thanks Matia for this post, I just came here to see if you wrote anything about the radiation stuff. I was wondering if we need to take potassium iodide pills and if we can indeed. Do you think we shall take nascent iodine, or yogurt is good enough.

For people like all of you potassium iodide will make you really bad, and I dont know how bad or how long. So i would not do that unless circumstances were dire. The products I recommended would be the preferred choice and eating food rich in iodine seems logical at this point. Also, many of you are taking supplements that help to detoxify the body already, this is also helpful. However, it really does seem at this point that taking things is premature. I am reading between the lines. One thing that occurred to me this morning is watching American reporters over there in Japan--they were not wearing masks. I am sure they were not speaking from the nuclear site, but still, that substantiates what many articles are saying-that the radiation is within a certain mile radius over there.

I agree nothing is clear yet  and West Coast is far far away from the source location. Though, I do have a question about the milk, yogurt, etc. for the long term. In the long term would it be still safe to consume them. I was reading an article on Nytimes and it says:

In an article in Wednesday’s paper, Denise Grady reported that the Japanese government has “taken precautions that should prevent the accident from becoming another Chernobyl, even if additional radiation is released.”

The Japanese government has evacuated people closest to the plant, told others to stay indoors and distributed the drug potassium iodide to protect the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine.
The great tragedy of Chernobyl was an epidemic of thyroid cancer among people exposed to the radiation as children — more than 6,000 cases so far, with more expected for many years to come. There is no reason for it to be repeated in Japan.
The epidemic in Chernobyl was preventable and would probably not have happened if people had been told to stop drinking locally produced milk, which was by far the most important source of radiation. Cows ate grass contaminated by fallout from the reactors and secreted radioactive iodine in their milk.

Hi Matia,
Thank you for posting about this and looking out for us with less harmfull alternatives once again.
I am quite worried now and was wondering if it'd be smarter to get these pills to save aside. Here is an article about it and after reading it, i feel it's best to be prepared. However don't know where to go for it?Do we need a prescription for these?

I think as this situation continues, it is difficult to know what is going on. A friend of mine has a father who is a nuclear scientist and has assured me that everything is ok. As a mother, this is hard to know. I am not so worried about myself, but, I am very worried about my children who are very small.I think we all need to do what we feel in our hearts is the right thing to do. Eat more yoghurt, drink more milk, eat seaweed if you can tolerate it. You all are mostly all taking many substances that detoxify your bodies, so this is a good thing. Only take the potassium iodide if you have it when you know things have reached dire circumstances. I truly hope they will not, and it does seem that they won't. However, I remain cautious and am watching as things progress and will do all that I have to to protect my children as I am certain you all will.

Sorry if I missed this. Yoghurt is usually added on list three bc, although healthy, it can cause a lot of symptoms!
