I have said this countless times, but it is a difficult thing to ingest-pun intended. This is such a great article on this subject--please please read it. It is both for those that have cancer and those whoa re trying to avoid it and stay healthy!

Thanks for sharing! I do hope that MD's and oncologists espeically start educating themselves and their patients of the effects of sugar. I read a study some place recently that how much pop companies are starting to lose as people are becoming more health concious, maybe not directly to removing all sugar, but avoiding large amounts of pop. These companies have thought of everything though, the new marketing plans of making smaller cans to help boost their sales, and investing in sugary sports drinks and vitamin waters. And the big one "nutrition shakes" which is sadly usually the first thing MD's and nutritionists in the hospital suggest patients drink to increase protien and calorie counts. It is so upsetting to read the list of ingredients and as one article describes these supposedly great nurtrition drinks with there colorful labels stating you will recieve your "complete balanced nutrition" and "to help get strong on the inside."  I know you have mentioned all the great benefits of avoiding sugars even healthy more natural ones by limiting to very small quanities when each of us is ready for this in treatment. Just one example, and I have always looked extremely young, but I had to laugh today as I was entering the church parking lot waiting for kids to pile out of the cars, one lady directing traffic stopped my car and asked that I get out and let my mom take over so I could get to class. I laughed, then politely apologized and said I was not in high school, but appreciated the completement as I turn 32 next month! Her jaw dropped! Removing toxins and truly caring for your body from the inside out is the answer to the fountain of youth! Do you think can I push the student discount until I'm 50?! I think I have finally graduated from being asked if I would like a kids menu! :) Again, thanks for sharing, great article!

That is such a great story Christina! I was at a dinner gathering a few weeks ago with new friends and these people were speaking about some major political events that happened in my early childhood. Of course, I knew exactly what they were talking about and was following the discussion--but I realized they were directing the bulk of the conversation toward others. They then turned toward me and said, " oh you wouldn't know what we are talking about, you are way too young!" OMG, I laughed to myself so hard inside, and just flashed back a gentle smile. It made me feel really good. I love new friends:)

:) I'm sure I will appreciate the youthful look more in a few years, as it has its own draw backs, like not being taken seriously. Some of my patients, especially the grumpy old men, usually tell me, "little girl, you wouldn't know the first thing about pain, or what I'm going through, go get a real job, make yourself useful by getting me a drink of water!" I have to bite my tongue a lot, not worth the energy to fight that battle! Luckily most are super cute and ask me what I want to be when I grow up. I usually reply, "hmm, good question, happy and healthy, how about you?" Most of my 80-90 y/o ladies crack a smile over that!

I went to a bridal shower yesterday where they had catered fettucine alfredo. I brought a piece of the homemade quiche from the forum recipe. It was so funny. Everyone there was so impressed they were wanting that instead of the other food.  They tell me all the time they want a copy of my diet. I tell them they must cut out all forms of sugar and that usually stops them in their tracks. Sadly, the addiction has consumed them to where they really don't believe they can do it. I must admit myself that it took ablut 5 months into this treatment before I lost the urge for sugar. Now the thought of cupcakes makes me sick. I am proud of the perseverance I have had to improve my health and all the others in this treatment. It's very obvious alot of people struggle with this. They tell me how youthful and pretty my skin is and that I glow. I am 56 years old so hey I will take it :)  i usually tell them "do not wait until pain drives you to improve your health. The time to get healthy is now and eliminating sugar is necessary".  Great thread. Thank you.

Hi Dr. M (and everyone)

Thanks so much for posting this link - my dad is being treated for stage IV melanoma at the moment and I think I have convinced him to put down the sugar, but it's helpful to have articles like these to back up my points.

Re: diet and youthful looks - I just had a birthday last week - my mother's friend wished me a happy birthday and asked how old I was (37) - when I told her, she gave me this grave look like she'd committed a big faux pas for asking - but in a way I took it as a compliment that she thought I was young enough for her to ask that question and have it not be odd.  And my co-worker just asked my age moments ago (I told her) and she was also surprised- thought I was in my twenties-  hopefully it's all this clean living and not a testament to my immaturity!
