A Good Question

Yesterday, one of my patients emailed and asked me a question about another patient who had told her about hormone therapy for Interstitial Cystitis. She said she had been doing much better since she had received it. While in some cases, hormones may make a difference in your symptoms, and even I once thought that in some cases hormone therapy was a must, my experience has been that hormones simply cycle problems back eventually, create other problems of imbalance that lead to more complicated conditions, and put the patient at a much higher risk for very serious diseases such as cancer. Hormonal problems are often involved in interstitial cystitis, but, I believe that it is a secondary problem to the main issue, it is not the primary problem. A person will experience a worsening of her symtoms around ovulation and menstruation, ut this is not because her hormones are the problem, it is because the hormonal fluctuations exacerbate the problem. So, using hromones to correct these shifts does not correct the problem, it simply temporarily compensates for it. And, taking that approach puts a person at a much higher risk for more chronic diseases down the line such as allergies, arthritis, chronic fatigue, weight problems, skin problems, digestive problems, a stronger more viscious form of IC, and finally even cancer! This is my opinion based on my experience.

How do hormonal fluctuations exacerbate the root problem?

Abaolsutley they effect the root problem, as progesterone rises monthly it feeds the yeast, when estrogen falls it exacerbates the inflammation, etc..... But, theses normal fluctuations are not the primary problem at all. They simply get in the way of the problem. Women having these same ebbs and flows do not experience any major problems, other than pms or what ever else they are respi ding to that is not balanced in their own body. But, the more balanced you are, the less your period cycle will effect you. When you are really balanced you should not even know your period is coming and you should not have cramps!

I have always struggled with severe menstrual cramps.  During treatment, I have noticed a reduction in cramps, and bladder pain and inflammation during my period.  It used to be so much worse

It is amazing how much women thing sufferring with their periods is normal. And, how much it changes as a person gets more balanced and healthy. I am so glad yours has improved so much!

Dr. Brizman,   I am planning a trip to California this summer so that I can become a long distance patient.  Recently, I had a test done that stated that my estrogen was as low as a women with a histerectomy.  I was consideringusing bio identical estrogen and am 34 years old.  Should I wait until you have evaluated me in person before starting any new treatment?
